The Signs of our Time: Recognizing Stroke Symptoms

How much do you really know about stroke?

Stroke is the third-leading cause of death in the United States and the No. 1 cause for nursing home admissions. Four million Americans are living with the effects of stroke, but immediate treatment within 60 minutes of symptom onset can greatly reduce the chances of disability and death.

Recognize the symptoms.
You could potentially save a life, simply by knowing the symptoms. Remember the acronym F.A.S.T. so that you can spot symptoms quickly:

  • Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side droop?
  • Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
  • Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange?
  • Time: If you observe any of these signs, it is important that you call 9-1-1 immediately.

Save a life, pass this on.
