When you're sick or hurt, how do you know if and when you should go to an urgent care center?
Sometimes there are situations that are too important to wait to go to your primary physician, but do not warrant a trip to the emergency room. Urgent care centers allow for quick access to medical help without having to make an appointment or schedule a visit.
Should you choose an urgent care center or the ER?
Emergency room: The emergency room is the place to go when dealing with serious incidents such as heart attack, stroke, traumatic injuries and severe illness. Go straight to the ER if you experience a life-threatening medical emergency. Call 911 immediately to make sure that medical care is received as soon as possible.
Urgent care: Consider urgent care if you have a non-emergency situation or an injury/illness that requires medical attention beyond home treatment. Some examples would be if you came down with the flu, fever or twisted your ankle. Urgent care centers are often open after your primary doctor's office hours, so if something should happen during the evening or on the weekend, you can still seek medical attention without the rush or wait of the emergency room.
